Aurora Wildlife Education: What Problems Do Monkeys Cause For People?

Depending on where in the world you live, you may not necessarily think of monkeys causing problems for people. After all, those who live in areas where these animals aren’t found in the wild will only be exposed to monkeys in the zoo or on the TV. Once you take a closer look at monkeys, however, will quickly realize that they can quickly become a nuisance and cause plenty of problems for people. This is true whether they are monkeys living in the wild close to human settlements or monkeys that someone decided to keep as a pet.

Strong And Unpredictable
No matter the size of the monkey in question, it will be incredibly strong. This is because all primates are proportionally significantly stronger than humans. This means that whether or not a monkey means you harm, it may cause an injury. Even a seemingly tame pet monkey may accidentally hurt its owner, leading to serious injuries or even permanent disfigurement or disability.

Sharp Teeth
To make the unpredictability and potential for injuries from monkeys worse, these animals have sharp canine teeth that are also very long. If they feel threatened, they may use them to cut, gnash, or bite. They may also pull on hair.

Spread Disease
As with any other animal, monkeys also carry the risk of disease. They can spread all types of infections, including parasitic, fungal, bacterial, and viral ones that may or may not be deadly. Macaque monkeys, for example, carry the Herpes B virus naturally, something which is frequently fatal in humans. Despite this, they are one of the most popular types of monkeys within the pet trade.

Specific Issues For Pet Monkeys
If you are one of the people who decide to get a pet monkey against the recommendations of every wildlife expert, you will be faced with a unique set of problems. Monkeys are highly intelligent and because they have opposable thumbs, they are able to open jars. It is safe to assume that if you can open something, a monkey can as well. In other words, a pet monkey may open your fridge and then proceed to open the various jars you have inside. It could also go into your bedroom throw items around in search of entertainment. Monkeys are excellent at mimicking behavior so once they see you open something a few times they should be able to do it themselves.

You can avoid these problems with monkeys by resisting the urge to get one as a pet. If you live in or are visiting an area where monkeys are frequently found, then avoid smiling at them as this indicates aggression. Don’t play tug a war with a monkey, even if it grabs something of yours. It will probably drop it eventually. You should also follow any guidelines a tour guide gives you.
