What should I do with an Aurora skunk after I catch it?
Introduction
Before even one decides to capture Aurora skunks that may be of nuisance or may be causing troubles in their property, one must be having a perfect idea on what to do with the skunks once they are trapped. This is important in order to avoid keeping the animal in the cage for long around one’s property as this may come along with its own consequences.
Dangers of keeping trapped skunks for long before taking any measures
• Skunks are known to be so defensive. In case the trapped skunks feel threatened, they may spray their foul odor which spreads up to 5 feet. This spray may cause discomfort around the premises where the skunk is trapped. It may also be the transmission agent for diseases such as rabies from the skunks to human bare skin.
• Due to hunger, the Illinois skunks may end up dying in the trap. This is the most inhumane way of handling skunks. One must hence take immediate measures of getting rid of the skunks before they reach the stage of dying of hunger.
• In states that have laws which do not allow trapping or capturing of skunks, keeping skunks in traps for long may bring about problems with the law and as a result, one me end up facing consequences of breaking the law.
Ways of dealing with captured skunks
There are several things one would do with captured skunks:
• Relocate the Aurora skunks
Skunks that are successfully captured in one’s premises may be relocated to areas far away from your property. Woody areas are the most recommended areas for relocating the skunks. During relocation, one must take caution in order to avoid startling the skunk. The person transporting the skunks should completely cover their bodies in case the skunk decides to spray.
• Kill the skunks
Although killing may not be the best way of getting rid of Illinois skunks, it remains to be the most effective final way of completely ending skunk invasion in one’s property. Trapped skunks may be killed by either euthanizing or even shooting. During killing of skunks, one must ensure that he or she does not get into contact with the skunks themselves or even any fluid that may come out of their bodies.
• Call animal agents for further assistance
For non-professionals who may have little or no knowledge about handling or getting rid of Aurora skunks, it is advisable to call animal agents for assistance.
Finally
Before releasing any trapped Illinois skunk back into their natural residence, one should look out for any signs of unhealthy skunks. Skunks that are not so fearful are the most probable disease carriers and hence such skunks should be eliminated completely through killing.
